My Values

Several core values have guided both my personal life and professional life as an educator:

  • Seeking long term, sustainable solutions that benefit everyone over quick fixes that mostly benefit those who are most vocal or have the most power
  • Dealing with all people with inclusiveness and integrity
  • Working hard to provide a quality education so that every child can attain the American dream, which I have lived as an immigrant from Canada in the late 1950’s and the first in my family to graduate from high school.

In recent years I have become increasingly alarmed at the direction of our nation. We have not only moved away from the values we cherish, but from the very principles on which this nation was founded, including the rule of law and a government that works for the people, not the powerful.

Over that same period, I have traveled the world from Switzerland to South Africa to Russia speaking about education for sustainable development to teachers, administrators, and government officials. I have experienced firsthand the need and desire for global solutions to many of our most challenging economic and environmental problems. I have also experienced how America’s diminished standing in the world makes it more difficult for America to take its rightful leadership role in solving those problems.

Almost two years ago, I became a grandfather for the first time with the birth of my daughter Mary’s daughter, Reese. Looking at Reese, I know that I need to take a stand, for her and for the people of the 14th Congressional District.

As a Congressman I will insure that the voices of the people will be heard in restoring our values to their rightful place in government, to protect families, the environment, and our national security.

Sincerely,

Larry Byrnes
